What is Functional Medicine?
Restoring Balance, Revitalizing Health
Our functional medicine team takes a holistic, science-based approach to wellness, combining the wisdom of natural healing with advanced lab testing and innovative therapies – beyond just drugs or surgery – to restore balance in the body’s physiological processes. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, functional medicine uncovers the root causes of health concerns, focusing on the individual as a whole.
Our Functional Medicine offers hope to those who have yet to find relief, even after consulting multiple practitioners. With a personalized approach, patients gain deeper insights into their symptoms and receive tailored solutions to support their journey toward optimal health. Here, health is more than the absence of disease – it’s about restoring vitality and well-being.
Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short in Addressing Chronic Disease
The conventional Western medical model is primarily designed for acute care – treating urgent conditions like appendicitis or heart attacks with medications or surgery. While this approach is essential in emergencies, it is ill-equipped to manage the rising epidemic of chronic and complex diseases.
We are witnessing an alarming increase in conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, dementia, and autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto’s, Celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis. Unlike acute conditions, these chronic illnesses are deeply influenced by lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental exposures – factors often overlooked in conventional medicine.
Most practitioners trained in the acute-care model lack the tools to assess the root causes of these conditions. They are not equipped to apply comprehensive nutritional, supplementation, and lifestyle strategies that can prevent, manage, or even reverse chronic disease.
Your Health, Your Answers
“Prevalence of metabolic health in American adults is alarmingly low, even in normal weight individuals. The large number of people not achieving optimal levels of risk factors, even in low-risk groups, has serious implications for public health.”
6 in 10
adults in the U.S. have a chronic disease
Despite spending double per person on “health” as comparable wealthy countries, the U.S. has some of the poorest outcomes and falls behind in international rankings of longevity.
How Functional Medicine Differs from Conventional Medicine
Functional medicine takes a fundamentally different approach to health compared to conventional medicine. Explore the key differences below to understand why this model is so effective.
Treating the Whole Person, Not Just Symptoms
Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on diagnosing and treating isolated diseases, functional medicine takes a holistic view of health. By deeply listening to a patient’s story and utilizing advanced lab testing, we assess the intricate connections between an individual’s history, lifestyle, and physiology. This comprehensive approach allows us to develop a personalized plan to restore balance and guide patients back to optimal health.
Advanced Lab Testing & a New Way to Interpret Results
Most conventional practitioners rely on standard lab testing, which provides only a basic snapshot of health. Functional medicine, on the other hand, utilizes comprehensive, advanced lab testing to identify underlying imbalances and dysfunctions that may be contributing to disease—often before symptoms become severe.
How Conventional Medicine Interprets Lab Results
In conventional medicine, lab results are assessed based on pathological ranges—statistical averages derived from the general population. If your numbers fall within this range, you’re considered “healthy.” However, this approach has serious limitations:
- The pathological range is based on data from people who are already sick. With over half of the population suffering from chronic illness, these “normal” values do not necessarily reflect optimal health.
- A diagnosis is typically only given after a disease process has already progressed to a measurable pathology, meaning treatment (often prescription drugs) is delayed until the condition worsens.
How Functional Medicine Interprets Lab Results
Functional medicine takes a proactive approach by using functional ranges—tighter, research-backed parameters that indicate optimal physiological function rather than just the absence of disease. This allows us to:
✅ Identify dysfunction before it turns into disease
✅ Address imbalances early using natural therapies, nutrition, and lifestyle changes
✅ Prevent chronic conditions rather than just manage symptoms
Pathological Range vs. Functional Range: Why It Matters
- Pathological Ranges (used in conventional medicine) compare your lab results to the average person who gets tested—many of whom are already sick. Being “normal” in this range simply means you match an unhealthy baseline.
- Functional Ranges (used in functional medicine) are scientifically established by organizations like the American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) and focus on what is truly optimal for health.
This difference is crucial: when conventional medicine tells you that your results are “normal,” it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re healthy – it just means you’re not yet sick enough to be diagnosed with a disease. Functional medicine identifies issues before they escalate, giving you the opportunity to take charge of your health now.
Addressing Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms
Conventional medicine often relies on drugs or surgery to manage symptoms rather than addressing the root cause of illness. While this approach may provide temporary relief, it often masks the underlying condition, allowing it to persist or worsen over time – especially in cases of chronic disease.
Functional medicine takes a different approach. Instead of simply suppressing symptoms, it seeks to identify and correct the imbalances that contribute to illness. Using natural therapies – such as nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and targeted supplementation – functional medicine works to optimize the body’s physiological processes.
By removing obstacles that interfere with the body’s innate ability to heal and replenishing what may be lacking, functional medicine supports the body in achieving true balance, vitality, and long-term wellness.

FAQs
How long does an appointment last?
Initial Consultation (Day 1): 1 hour.
Report of finding (Day 2): 45 minutes
Chiropractic appointments: 5 min
Why do babies and kids need to be adjusted?
Babies and kids experience big developmental changes rapidly—physically, emotionally, and neurologically. From birth trauma to “normal births” to tumbles during crawling, walking, or play, their nervous systems can become stressed or imbalanced. Neurologically focused chiropractic care gently supports the brain and body connection, helping kids grow, develop, and function at their best. It can support things like better sleep, digestion, focus, immune function, behavior, and overall calm. The earlier we support their nervous system, the better the foundation for lifelong health.

Can I have my lab tests done through my primary care physician?
Most labs that we recommend will not be easily, if at all, attainable through your regular doctor. That said, some may be and you can always ask.
I’ve seen a specialist; how is this different?
Great question! While medical specialists certainly have their place in acute care and crisis management, neurologically focused chiropractic care combined with functional medicine offers a more comprehensive and proactive approach to health.
Traditional specialists often focus on isolated symptoms or body systems, which can lead to a “band-aid” approach—treating the symptom without addressing the root cause. In contrast, neurologically focused chiropractic care looks at how your nervous system—the master control system of your body—is functioning. If your brain and nervous system aren’t communicating optimally with your body, it can lead to a wide range of health issues, even if individual organs or systems seem “normal” on tests.
Functional medicine digs deeper, using advanced lab testing and personalized strategies to uncover the root causes of dysfunction—such as nutrient imbalances, toxins, chronic inflammation, and hidden infections. It looks at the whole person, not just a diagnosis.
Together, these approaches don’t just aim to manage disease—they work to restore health from the inside out. The goal isn’t just to feel better temporarily, but to achieve long-term healing, resilience, and vibrant health—without unnecessary drugs or surgery.
If you’re tired of getting bounced around from specialist to specialist without real answers, this may be the empowering, integrative approach you’ve been looking for.
